What Voters Need to Know About Mike Simmons

Mike Simmons is a lifelong resident of the 9th District. As the son of an Ethiopian asylum seeker and a Rogers Park salon owner, Mike made history when he became the first Black person to represent the Far North Side of Chicago in the Illinois State Senate.

Before serving in Springfield, Mike fought for the disenfranchised communities of Chicago in City Hall where he worked to preserve affordable housing and protect renters, and later to remove opportunity gaps for Black youth at the My Brother's Keeper Alliance with the Obama Foundation.

He is a progressive with a proven track record. In 5 years in the State Senate, Mike has passed more than 50 bills including:
The state’s first Child Tax Credit to get money back in the pockets of working families, A $2.5 million restoration grant program to help small businesses rebuild after COVID, The landmark Jett Hawkins Act that bans hair discrimination in Illinois schools, and $1.5 Billion passed to fund and improve transportation systems in Chicago and around Illinois.

Mike has been fighting back against hateful bullies his entire life. Now he’s ready to take on the Trump Administration to Abolish ICE, protect our neighbors and bring results back for our families.

Let’s make history and elect Mike to be the first Black person to represent the 9th District of Illinois and the first Ethiopian-American in Congress!
