MIKE SIMMONS is homegrown, a vigorous champion for the people, an energetic legislator, and an accessible leader who gets things done.
His family integrated Lincoln Square on Chicago’s north side in 1981, moving into newly built public housing that resulted from a landmark 1976 Supreme Court housing desegregation decision.
He was raised in a multi-generational household where his mom opened her own salon in Rogers Park while raising him and his younger sister, his grandmother held down two jobs, and his uncle was a veteran. His dad is a refugee from Ethiopia who sought asylum in America, arriving in Edgewater in the early 1980s.
In 2021 he became the first openly LGBTQ+ person and first Ethiopian-American to serve as an Illinois State Senator. He has passed nearly 50 bills into law in just 4 years and is absolutely unafraid to go against the grain in fighting for what’s right. Mike is leading on housing, tax relief for working people, expanded access to healthcare and public transit, protecting our drinking water, and defending hard-won human rights.
While he doesn’t look like a typical member of Congress, he’s used to navigating systems not designed for him or his communities.
Mike will never forget where he comes from and will always center the people he represents in Congress.
